Additional Information

Kourtaliotiko Gorge

The Kourtaliotiko Gorge is located 22 km south of Rethymno and stretches 3 km. It’s one of the most spectacular natural attractions in the Rethymnon region. The massive cliffs of the gorge rise to 600 meters and are dotted with caves and openings, home to a variety of fauna. The gorge is traversed by the Kourtaliotis River, which flows into Lake Preveli. One of the highlights is the Kourtaliotis waterfall, a magnificent cascade nestled in a narrow, shadowy part of the gorge. This waterfall can be reached by swimming from a lower section of the river.

Preveli Palm Beach

Located about 35 km south of Rethymno, Preveli Beach, also known as Lake Preveli, sits at the mouth of the imposing Kourtaliotikos Gorge. The Grand River (Megalos Potamos) flows into the sea here, creating a small lake. Known for its breathtaking scenery, Preveli Beach was a favorite spot for hippies during the 1960s and 1970s. The riverbank is home to a large colony of Theophrastus palms, contributing to the tropical ambiance of the area. The lake, approximately 500 meters long, remains filled with water year-round. You can walk along the river, shaded by palm trees and other greenery, and venture into the picturesque gorge. If you prefer, you can also take a swim in the cool ponds that form within the gorge.
